Letter from Senator Specter to a constituant.
Thank you for contacting the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs to express your concerns regarding a possible cover-up of Persian Gulf veterans' illness.
The Committee is now embarking on an aggressive investigation of the illnesses that our military men and women have reported since their service in the Persian Gulf. This will include a comprehensive review of the Department of Defense's (DOD) role in evaluating possible environmental risks to service members and whether that course of action may have contributed to Gulf War illnesses. Another important task will be to determine whether the DOD and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have responded adequately to the numerous health complaints of many Gulf War veterans.
Your letter requested specifically that this Congress be in touch with Joyce Riley. Ms. Riley did testify before this Committee at a field hearing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania earlier this year. Her testimony, along with information collected from other professionals in the medical and science fields respectively, will assist us in our investigation of the various methods of research and treatment that are being used today in the nation's VA Hospitals.
I respect and admire your service to our country. Please know that I will keep your thoughts and concerns in mind.
Senator Specter is either mistaken or not being totally honest. Joyce has never testified before congress at a field hearing, as a matter of fact she has never been in Harrisburg, Pa.
In the interest of fairness, we will supply equal space for Senator Specter, should he care to respond.
